Surayyn Selvan

Ph.D. Candidate

Surayyn Uthaya Selvan is a Ph.D. candidate at the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. His doctoral research focuses on developing a computational decision-making tool to support ecologically informed architectural design. He is particularly interested in constructing unconventional data-driven design methodologies to enhance architectural informatics.

Originally from Malaysia, Surayyn holds a B.Sc (Hons) in Architecture and began his professional career as an Assistant Architect, working on rail transportation design and planning. He later served as a Project Manager in interior design and construction, where he gained hands-on experience in multidisciplinary project execution. Then, he pursued a Master’s in Advanced Architecture at the Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia, where his work explore speculative architecture and wearable technology through remote sensing and physical computing.

His thesis investigated the use of emotional analytics and crowd-sourced data to predict “emotional landscapes” through computational urban design and planning. Surayyn’s current Ph.D. research contributes to the EU-funded ECOLOPES project, where he aims to advance interdisciplinary approaches that promote holistic and equitable decision-making in architectural design.
