Nurit Bar Shai
Postdoctoral Fellow
Nurit Bar-Shai (Ph.D.) is a postdoctoral fellow at the Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning at the Technion. Her practice integrates biology, materials, and biofabrication, informed by extensive experience in interdisciplinary experimental art, community biotechnology, and education. Her research explores living systems as material platforms and the ways biological processes can generate, transform, and structure matter, with an emphasis on environmentally informed material development. During her doctoral research at Tel Aviv University, she developed seaweed cellulose scaffolds derived from marine macroalgae for tissue engineering, exploring their potential for biomedical applications and the impact of structural properties on cellular and tissue responses. Her current research at D.DLab focuses on microbial systems and biomineralization processes as a basis for developing novel bio-based materials for applications at the intersection of biology, engineering, architecture, and design.
