Chair of the Architecture Program

Shany Barath founded and directs Disrupt.Design Lab at the Technion Israel Institute of Technology, Faculty of Architecture and Town Planning, and is a principal investigator at the National Building Research Institute and the Resnick Sustainability Center for Catalysis. She is the recipient of the Climate Solutions Prize for Breakthrough Research, the Goldberg Research Prize Fund for her contribution to industry, the Cooper Award for Excellence in Research, and the Halevi Prize for Innovative Applied Engineering, recognizing her pioneering work on photosynthetic living building materials and bio-based construction. Her interdisciplinary research redefines conventional architecture through emerging biotechnologies and robotic manufacturing, targeting ~40% of global CO₂ emissions, ~30% of global waste, and ~50% of raw material use directly accounted to the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction sectors.

She studied at the Technion, TU Delft in the Netherlands, and the Architectural Association Design Research Laboratory (AADRL) in the UK. Before joining the Technion, she served as Studio Master and Program Head at the London Architectural Association (AA), worked at the internationally renowned practices UNStudio and West8, and co-founded ShaGa Architects, where interdisciplinary, planet-centered technological strategies were applied to real-world design challenges. Her work has been showcased at the Venice Biennale, Beijing Biennale, Milan Design Week, and the Triennale Milano 24th International Exhibition. Shany has received prestigious design awards, including the Design Educates Award Gold Prize, with Disrupt.Design Lab technologies being  recognized by Fiori Salon Sustainability Mention, EU Engage4BIO Award, and described as “paving the way to the future we want.”
